About Us

The Salisbury Street Foundation (SSF) is unique in New Zealand in its role as provider of residential re-integrative services for paroled prisoners. Established more than 30 years ago and in 1996 it became New Zealand’s first privately-operated intermediate correctional facility with full government funding. By 2009 SSF was the only operation of its type receiving such support.

The Salisbury Street Foundation (SSF) is a privately-run residential facility for prison parolees and occasionally persons referred directly from the courts. Located in a mid 20th Century manor in Merivale, Christchurch, it operates as a residential bridge between imprisonment and the community. Its objective is to assist clients to adjust to being back in the community and to live productive and crime-free lives.

"To provide a professional, caring residential programme for men who have been involved in criminal offending, to prevent further offending, and to facilitate their safe integration into the community."

The objective is to assist clients to adjust to the free world and to live productive and crime-free lives. As such, SSF belongs to a genre of semi-custodial facilities that was born in England, Ireland and the United States in the early 1800s and which became particularly popular in the US from the mid-1960s. Two of the best-known American examples are Synanon, established in Santa Monica in  1958, and theDelancey Street Foundation, which developed as an offshoot of Synanon in San Francisco in 1971. Delancey St is highly successful and provided the model upon which SSF was founded.
